Mason Jennings- “The Field”

This is one of my favorite songs of this year.  It captures the heartbreak of war perfectly, essentially about a parent losing their child.  This part of the song kills me every time:

If I was the President, if I was that man
I would walk out with those kids, out across the sand
If I was the President, if I was that brave
I would take a shovel, then dig each child their grave
If I was the President, and my world turned black
I would want no victory, I’d just want you back

Phoenix- “Too Young”

Because it’s been that kind of a week, and there’s nothing like a Phoenix, throwback 80’s song to get you ready for the weekend.  Plus, I get to see them Tuesday, and because of that I have dedicated today to Phoenix-Friday.

Sigur Ros- Glosoli- Heima

Heima is a film Sigur Ros made after a world tour a few years ago.  They decided they were going to travel around Iceland and give free performances in remote, off the beaten path locations to all their fans.  They wanted to give back to them everything they missed while they were on the road.

It gives a lovely picture of Iceland, and an even nicer picture of the band.  If you have never been to Iceland, Heima is bound to make you feel the need to go.  If you have been there, the film will transport you like you couldn’t believe.

Oh, and if you don’t fall in love with Sigur Ros after watching this film, you’re not my friend.

I realize we went a little overboard, there are four hours of music here.  Maybe drinking beers while compiling the list wasn’t such a good idea.

I know what I will be doing this summer.

Riding this around anywhere and everywhere.  I bought it a couple weekends ago and picked it up last night.  I was leary after I bought it, because it was a somewhat whimsical purchase.  But after riding it home in the rain, nonetheless, I couldn’t be happier.  It is unbelieveably fun, not to mention I have reduced my carbon footprint, am going to save money on gas (we’re talking 90 miles/gallon, folks), and look super cute tooling around.

Loney, Dear at the Cedar last night. Such beautiful music I had tears in my eyes. No kidding.

Boys. Summer. Wayfarers. What more is there to life?

Best. Summer. Song. Ever.  Also, I can sing the bejesus out of this on karaoke nights.

I saw this commercial at the BTAA’s at the Walker Art Center a couple years back.  It brings a smile to my face.

Love is the ultimate outlaw. It just won’t adhere to any rules. The most any of us can do is to sign on as its accomplice. Instead of vowing to honor and obey, maybe we should swear to aid and abet. That would mean that security is out of the question. The words “make” and “stay” become inappropriate. My love for you has no strings attached. I love you for free.

Tom Robbins

Quite possibly my favorite writer.  I saw him speak at the Minneapolis Public Library last week.  He didn’t speak for very long, but made up for it with his wit and charisma.  Tom, I think you and I could be friends.
